My last project: Graphic art installations of ‘street poetry’ about ‘heureux hasards’.

This my beloved project about how I am crossing boundaries with design and fine Art. It is about surprising, entertaining and opening new possibilities and performances. These message take life in other contexts in order to draw our attention to them, and to change their meanings. They manifest themselves in diverse places, in wild and unexpected or purposeful displays across various media and around the world.

Notting Hill Arts club is pleased to announce a new solo show by French artist Delphine Perrot.

In February 2011, Perrot set off with a one-way ticket to Polynesia, the first stop on a remarkable year-long tour around the world. Throughout her travels, Perrot created beautiful, intricate sketchbooks capturing the memories, encounters, and inspirations of her journey.

Dance, lost and found objects, typography and fashion particularly fascinate Perrot and her work often contains references to botanical encyclopaedias, cabinet d’objets trouves, old movies, maps, and quirky, rare animals. Perrot’s sketchbooks are layered with whimsical drawings, mementos, and plant cuttings, creating an intimate visual narrative of her adventures.

Art direction for the art duo: ‘DD’

‘DD’ is the code name for a duo of new media projectionists (Delphine Perrot & Dave Lynch) who take a playful look on the world around them by mixing technology, art and intervention.
Their aim, to explore the relationship between iconography, installation & performance by subverting cinematic history and the public’s mass media memory. DD sees the return of 60’s chic with the style and wit of ‘Bonnie & Clyde’, directing visual poetic experiences via installation and stories. Using cities, buildings and lost spaces as their canvas, no space is too big or too small. DD have light artillery for every situation with invention and design at its heart – nothing is untouchable!

Mission:
A unique and unforgettable dining experience: a journey through the best of world food, enwrapped by its contours, sitting at Worldscape – a giant sculptural model of the world 15-metres long, 6 metres wide and over 2 metres high.

Description:
Global Feast is a unique dining experience – a journey through the best of world food, enwrapped by its contours.
The centrepiece of the event is Worldscape, a giant sculptural model of the world 15-metres long, 6 metres wide and over 2 metres tall – an installation doubling as both table and seating.

Each of 20 successive evenings during the London Olympics, 80 guests gather at the Old Town Hall in Stratford – the closest venue to the Olympic Park – to travel through the cultures and cuisines of the entire world. Each guest dines in a unique part of the sculptural space – sitting on its oceans, dining off its coastlines, illuminated by its cities, enshadowed by its mountains.

The banquet is constantly reinvented as the menu shifts further east each night, serving a new slice of the world’s culinary highlights, interspersed with entertainment intermezzi. The collected courses represent the best of both the wider world and local London – celebrating the genius, talent, and panoramic cultural heritage of our supper-club chefs, all within a delicious menu created by the doyenne of underground restaurants, Kerstin Rodgers (The Underground Restaurant).

I plugged my laptop all day long to listen Samba music and I even had a dance with the old man ;) The project was displayed for a very busy night at Teatro Collectivo (Sao Paulo).

Series of vintage actresses I love.

Editorial & identity development of Argentinian photographer Natasha Ygel for her printed portfolio.

Bright lights, big city and a bustling crowd marked the premiere of a new artistic collaboration within motion pictures. Central London itself became the backdrop as Delphine worked with gifted visual artist and technophile Dave Lynch, in projecting her visually arresting slogans in the capital city – using its buildings and landmarks as living screens. Harnessing the pedal power of a self fashioned mobile unit from which to project, this guerilla inspired artistic action remained in keeping with Delphine’s themes of engaging and inspiring an audience via thought provoking works and actions. By directing new possibilities within an urban filmscape, the team took art to the people, who by their very presence became cast members in this the first of no doubt many sequels.

Se7en Deadly Sins is a new one-off four hour improvisational performance work that brings together dancers and musicians from the North East. Experimenting with the narrative of the Seven Deadly Sins, the four hours will see a protagonist falling from grace, giving into the temptations of Pride, Lust, Greed, Gluttony, Envy, Sloth and Wrath.

The performance is a collaboration between Stephanie Jong (Independent Curator), dancer Nicole Watson (Artistic Director, Surface Area Dance), and musician Brendan Murphy (World-percussionist).

‘I reacted very quickly to this event as I was in the Pacific and we got a red alert early in the morning.
When I got back home, I came up with the idea and drew this sign spontaneously.

Then I started to spread it to friends via internet and crossed my fingers this universal sign for love and support for Japan would find its way. It was like putting a bottle in the sea.

Delphine produced 2 similar giant cards for a V&A Friday Late about Two’s a Pair. ‘In conjunction with Designersblock Two’s a Pair will celebrate famous design duos and explore collaborative working in contemporary design through installations, talks and workshops, and will culminate in great design giveaways. In the spirit of cooperation (and fun), meet a friend or introduce yourself to a stranger – you can’t go it alone!’

Delphine felt in love with old books in her grandma’s house and kept this interest while she was doing her MA about flea markets in Paris. She created a series of home made books displaying her research, people she met, curiosities and type research. That was the starting point of her vernacular research.

‘Delphine has acted in a pivotal role at several of the Design Museum’s recent experimental public events. Her diligence towards detail combined with creative flair and expansive imagination have been led to inspirational public interactions. The Design Museum continues to wish to work with her, and we are pleased that she has been able to commit to programming workshop activities within the David Adjaye Urban Africa exhibition on 23rd July 2009’.

During Dephine’s time Studio Myerscough she was involved with David Adjaye’s exhibition graphics. It was a fun challenge to make the large red room a workshop for a late night at the Design Museum and include large scale drawings. At the request of the Museum, Delphine subsequently ran an engaging workshop ‘Africa and sustainability,’ that lifted from the sentiment of the show. In order to capture the spirit of the strong design ethic from this rich culture, participants were encouraged to create their own unique patterns inspired by noted examples found in both textile and architectural form. Collaged posters and postcards were created to compliment the photo expose of David Adjaye’s work, which itself showcased the variety within key cities of the diverse and fascinating nation.

At the request of AA Saloon’s founders, Delphine was invited to discuss and interpret her works to date in front of a new audience. In timely fashion with the event held on Bastille Day on July 14 2010, and inspired by this politically hot date, focus was given to previous shows Nothing Works and Affluenza where audiences wrote there own personal manifestos. Continuing these works, participants were encouraged to design their own revolutionary inspired t-shirts complete with slogans that had meaning to the wearer. This represented an evolution of media from poster to that of clothing, a more portable and personal billboard from which to communicate.

Delphine invited people to participate with her various posters from her previous exhibitions. In October 2009 as a result of a longstanding working relationship with the Design Museum, a workshop was held to showcase the work of Delphine Perrot, in the vain of mini retrospective. Key works including elements from Affluenza and Nothing Works, some of her earlier larger group shows, were given ‘another opportunity to view’. A fusion of her past works that meditated on the commercial and transient nature of desire and need, was brought to life in the form of a workshop that engaged participants to create their own take on this provocative topic. Posters were the order of the day, and memories were set for longer.

Launching Design week in September 2008, ‘Nothing Works,’ inspired by the work of the same name by Gordon Matta-Clark, was held at Shoreditch Town Hall, where cross-discipline visual artists harnessed the architectural space of the building’s maze like basement as a blank canvas for their individual installations. The bleakness of the surroundings were enriched with pieces that where to respond to exactly that. In a playful and provocative approach, Delphine’s happy slogans were given new form and attached to striking red balloons that not only filled the space, but created a sense of hope and freedom from the obvious architectural confines. In contrast to the balloons, striking and memorable billboard posters greeted visitors at the entrance of the exhibition, where each were encouraged to divulge their own personal take on the origins of modern social decay in pen. ‘Nothing works because…’ (an extrapolation of Matta-Clark’s work to drive engagement on the topic), provided a forum to speak out, whist the twist on a childhood floating favourite, took the role of uplifting spirits perhaps brought down by the companion piece.

‘Delphine Perrot has a fresh and exciting approach to design. She works on a wide range of engaging and interactive projects crossing over and pushing her design ideas into a variety of environments. I’m interested in her flexible and creative approach to public spaces and her use of new technology and new media. As a programmer I’m always on the lookout for artists with the ability to engage with different audiences, spaces and environments in new, creative and interesting ways. So I will be following Delphine with interest and looking for possible ways to collaborate in the future!’

More recently her practice has developed, incorporating live media and outdoor installations. This has been marked with a more collaborative approach, working with other artists, filmmakers and designers. This is both a critical and exciting turn within her practice.’

Artist and designer Delphine Perrot hosted an interactive space using balloons, posters and written word slogans, allowing participants to interact with and contribute to this evolving work.

October 2009 saw The Bigger Picture Festival on Interdependence in the foreground. Launched at the thinking person’s destination The Hub, the festival was a free interactive series of events and workshops held at the Barge House on London’s Southbank, hosted by the new economic foundation (nef). The festival’s master stoke was to bring some of the more difficult socio-political and economics-led environmental issues to the forefront, whilst showcasing inspiring solutions from thought leaders and sparking further debate. Visitors were encouraged to engage with the various facets of show, which notably included an interactive space controlled by Delphine, that allowed participants to engage and contribute with the varying media of balloons, posters and written word slogans. Empowering the audience with knowledge and creative means to make a difference.

Inspired by writings of the same name by Oliver James, the exhibition of March 2009 proved a timely reminder as to the excesses and wants of a modern world. Capturing the commercial spirit of the audience, Delphine played with the social bug of needing and wanting more, achieved by asking a willing audience to participate in creating their own placards to demonstrate the message to others of their own self-awareness on the matter. ‘I need’ and ‘I want’ took on a playful tone, but in essence were based on the more sinister and captivating themes of social hedonism and desire. An excellent leveler, this interactive piece was the star in show at the multi-disciplined exhibition of artists’ works, where results truly speak for themselves as we enjoyed from the witty and factual to the pensive and extreme.

The Hub in London’s Kings Cross played host to the inaugural event launching The Bigger Picture Festival of Interdependence. In attendance were thinkers to inspire connections and formulate plans in answer to some of the bigger questions we face socially, economically and environmentally. In partnership with the new economic foundation (nef), the think and do tank that promotes people focused solutions for global well being, alongside others, the evening proved a hot bed of debate amongst the multi-faceted crowd of; politicians, economists, environmentalists, artists and social commentators. Big topics were tackled and everyone had equal opportunity to contribute. In support of this launch pad evening, Delphine displayed screen prints within the theatre of discussion, where attendees could interact with her tactile and thought provoking positive messages and slogans, so placed to encourage the room.

Fresh from the success of the Apollo Project, and by request from the respected Surface Gallery Nottingham, Delphine’s dramatic and engaging buzz words were once again presented on loop and on screen in this new more traditional setting. As part of a mixed media group show, her installation further subverted the leading role of television by communicating joy and ambition instead of trying to sell. Ratings were high for this engaging and self-affirming show.

The Apollo Project breathed hope and enthusiasm back into a commercially struggling community. An idea so simple yet inspired, occupying a former video store and filling it with mixed media art installations, to which the public could visit during the hours of trade, therefore reducing the impact of empty shops. In keeping with the small screen setting, Delphine displayed enthusiastic and graphically crafted buzz words ‘as live’ on retro televisions, for window shoppers to engage with. Commercials that were not commercial, but there to encourage and intrigue – a playful and arresting fusion of design and innovation that harnessed the raw materials of the environment in which they were found.
